Apple iPhone 12 and 12 Pro release date, specs, memory,ram and features

Apple announced the iPhone 12 during an event on 13 October 2020. There are four new devices: the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

This is everything you need to know about all the new iPhone 12 models, including what they all feature, how much they cost and when they will be available.

Apple iPhone 12 release date and price

Apple revealed the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max on 13 October during its “Hi Speed” event.

The iPhone 12 mini starts at $699. The iPhone 12 starts at $799. The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999 and the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1099.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be available to pre-order from 16 October, with availability starting 23 October.

The iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available to pre-order from 6 November, with availability starting 13 November.

Design

The Apple iPhone 12 models come with a refined design, offering squarer edges more like the iPhone 4 or 5 compared to the rounder edges we had been used to since the iPhone 6. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 have an aluminium frame, while the iPhone 12 Pro models have a polished stainless steel frame and a more premium finish overall.

Like with the iPhone 11 models, the iPhone 12 models all have a glass rear. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 have a glossy finish with a frosted finish for the camera housing, while the iPhone 12 Pro models have a frosted finish on their rear with a glossy camera housing. All are IP68 water and dust resistant.

There is still a notch on the front at the top of the display of all the iPhone 12 models and all models still have the prominent camera lenses in the top left corner of the rear of the devices.

The iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 both have dual camera lenses, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have three lenses.

All four iPhone 12 models come with a feature call MagSafe.

Displays

All the iPhone 12 models have an OLED display, which Apple calls a Super Retina XDR display. Previously the iPhone 11 had an LCD display, while OLED was reserved for the 11 Pro models. They also all have True Tone, HDR and Haptic Touch.

The iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4-inch display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, while the iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch display with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels.

The iPhone 12 Pro also has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen. The 12 Pro has a 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution like the iPhone 12, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 2778 x 1284 pixel resolution.

All four models have Face ID in the notch at the top of their displays.

Cameras

The Apple iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 have a dual rear camera, comprised of a 12-megapixel wide lens with a f/1.6 aperture and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens with an f/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree field of view.

The iPhone 12 Pro has a triple rear camera, featuring the same two lenses as the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12, along with an extra 12-megapixel telephoto sensor that offers 2x optical zoom.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also has three lenses on the rear, but the telephoto lens features a 65mm focal length and comes with a 2.5x optical zoom and optical image stabilisation. Meanwhile, the wide camera sensor comes with a f/1.6 aperture 26mm focal length and 1.7µm pixels.

Improvements have also been made to Night Mode across all four iPhone 12 models and there is also Night Mode on the front camera too. The Pro models also have Night Mode in Portrait Mode too however, while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini don’t.

Hardware and software

Apple has adopted 5G connectivity for all four models of the iPhone 12.

The A14 chip is under the hood of all four iPhone 12 models and they have the next generation Neural Engine, as well as iOS 14. In terms of storage, the iPhone 12 Pro models come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options, while the iPhone 12 models come in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB options
